Yu-zen Washi Tin Canister 7 oz (200g), Paper Washi - UKIYO-e, with Gold Color Tin Internal Cap, Made in Japan

Kotodo’s canisters are crafted in the traditional Japanese style, specifically designed to protect delicate tea leaves from moisture in Japan’s humid climate. The inner lid and the deep overlap between the body and the outer lid help maintain airtightness, while the cylindrical shape prevents moisture accumulation in corners. The round shape, traditionally seen as auspicious in Japan, adds to the canister’s design. The lid opens smoothly with a simple lift, no twisting or prying necessary.

These canisters blend traditional craftsmanship with modern manufacturing techniques. While some steps use manually-operated vintage machines, each canister is mostly handcrafted and finished by hand.

Product Features:

  • Smooth Surface: The finished edges of the lid and body are perfectly flush, minimizing friction and prolonging the life of the Washi paper. This feature is exclusive to handmade canisters and contributes to an aesthetically pleasing design.

  • Clicking Cover: The lid features a unique clicking mechanism that aligns the cover and body’s patterns perfectly. As you twist the lid counterclockwise to close, it snaps into place with an audible “click,” ensuring the patterns align. This feature is available only in patterned canisters.

  • Airtight Metal Inner Lid: The gold-colored tin inner lid is airtight year-round and prevents light, humidity, and air from affecting the contents. Unlike plastic, which can expand and contract with temperature changes, the tin lid maintains a consistent seal. The high-quality material ensures long-lasting durability, and the knob shape is easy to open.

  • Beveled Cut Edges: The edges of the lid and body are carefully beveled inward to prevent accidental cuts, ensuring safety for users.

  • Lead-Free Construction: KOTODO has eliminated leaded solder and replaced it with electric welding, using lead-free, food-grade steel and tin for a completely safe and eco-friendly product.

  • Bottom: Each canister bears the KOTODO signature embossed on its bottom, making it uniquely identifiable.

Why KOTODO Chooses Tin:

  • Premium Quality: In Japan, tin-plated steel is regarded as a premium material, known for its elegance and sleekness. The tins used for these canisters are soft and delicate, requiring careful handling.

  • Eco-Friendly: Tin-plated steel is 100% recyclable, and Japan has a high recycling rate, with 90% of steel canisters being recycled annually.

  • Versatile: Tin is perfect for keeping air and light out, which helps preserve the contents inside, such as delicate tea leaves. It maintains a stable temperature, ensuring the contents stay fresh.

Product Care:

  • Avoid Contact with Liquids: Tin-plated steel is not suitable for storing liquids, and exposure to water or excessive humidity may cause rust. Always dry the canister completely after handling with wet hands.

  • No Dishwashing or Microwave Use: Do not wash by hand or place in the dishwasher, microwave, or oven.

  • Cleaning: Gently wipe the surface with a cloth wrung out of water and dry thoroughly. Avoid leaving moisture on the surface, as it can lead to rusting.

  • Rusting: If rusting occurs, discontinue use. Rust itself is not harmful but may transfer to other metal surfaces. If the canister is stored in a refrigerator, rusting may occur due to condensation during temperature changes.

  • Careful Handling: Treat the canister with care to ensure its longevity and optimal performance.
